How to Change the Mobile Number on Your GST and Udyam Logins

27 August 2026 · Kamna Team

Every login your factory depends on is gated by an OTP, and almost all of those OTPs go to one mobile number. If that number sits in a staff member's pocket, or belongs to a SIM nobody has paid for since last year, you do not lose a password. You lose the ability to file, to raise an e-way bill and to prove you are an MSME. Both of the fixes below take under half an hour on an ordinary working day, and both get considerably harder once the number is actually gone.

Which logins actually run on that one number?

More than owners usually count. The GST portal, the e-way bill and e-invoice systems, your Udyam registration, the current account and its UPI, WhatsApp Business, and every buyer or marketplace account opened over the years. The e-way bill link is worth spelling out: you register at ewaybillgst.gov.in with your GSTIN, and the system sends an OTP to the mobile number registered on the GST portal before it lets you set a username. Change the number on GST and it does not propagate on its own, so use the Update from Common Portal option on the e-way bill site afterwards to pull the new details across.

How do you change the mobile number on the GST portal?

Contact details are non-core fields, and GSTN states that a non-core amendment is auto approved on filing and needs no processing by a tax official. Log in and go to Services, then Registration, then Amendment of Registration Non-Core Fields. Where your authorised signatory is also the promoter or partner, open the Promoter/Partners tab, edit that person, enter the new mobile and email, and save: two separate OTPs are sent, one to the new number and one to the new email address. Then open the Verification tab, tick the declaration, and submit with DSC or EVC to generate an ARN. One blocker to know about: if a core amendment of yours is already pending approval, the portal will not accept a non-core amendment until that one clears.

What if the authorised signatory has already left?

Then it is a two-stage job, and CBIC publishes the sequence. Add the new authorised signatory on the Authorised Signatory tab, submit through the Verification tab, and wait around fifteen minutes for the change to settle. Log in again, return to the same non-core amendment screen, deselect the old primary signatory, mark the new one as primary, and submit again. The step people miss is that the form pre-fills the old contact details, so you have to overwrite them rather than assume the new signatory brings their own.

How does Udyam work, and what is the trap?

On udyamregistration.gov.in, Print/Verify contains Forgot Udyam/UAM Number, which asks you to pick either the mobile or the email as filled in your application and sends the OTP there. That either/or is the good news: losing the SIM is survivable if the registered email still works. To change details, use Update/Cancel Udyam Registration, which opens the Udyami Login, and note what that screen actually asks for, because paid websites lie about it. The OTP goes to the mobile or email as filled in the application, not to your Aadhaar linked number. Aadhaar OTP belongs to fresh registration, not to updates.

What if the number and the email are both gone?

There is an official route and it costs nothing. An Office Memorandum of the Office of the Development Commissioner (MSME) dated 15 January 2024 authorises MSME Development and Facilitation Offices to resolve updating discrepancies in their jurisdiction, with a 48 hour timeline and the Champions Desk directed to assist. You can also raise it on champions.gov.in, whose grievance form has a category for Udyam registration and certificate issues and validates an OTP on your current mobile rather than the lost one. Under S.O. 2119(E), District Industries Centres act as a single window for the same problem. Anyone charging you a fee to update a Udyam certificate is selling a free government service, and the portal says on its own front page that registration is free of cost.

How do you keep this from becoming a crisis?

Put the business identity on a SIM held in the firm's name and kept in the office, and give staff a separate number for day to day coordination with vendors and buyers. Once a quarter, log in to each service and confirm the number on record is still that one, and keep a written sheet of which service uses which number, who holds the SIM, and where the recovery email lands. When someone with access leaves, work that sheet in the first week: GST signatory, banking and UPI, buyer and marketplace accounts, and the WhatsApp Business account that is probably still logged in on their handset. One sheet of paper replaces the only copy that exists today, which is your memory.
